چکیده

The basis of the Medium Access Control (MAC), proposed in IEEE 802.11 standard for wireless local area networks, is the Distributed Coordination Function (DCF). DCF uses Carrier Sense Multiple Access with Collision Avoidance (CSMA/CA) to resolve contention between wireless stations and to verify successful transmissions. In this work we present an analytical model of the IEEE 802.11 MAC protocol validated by simulation results for the DCF throughput, for both packet transmission schemes employed by DCF, the basic access and the RTS/CTS access mechanism. Moreover, we depict the saturation throughput and the average packet delay for 1, 5.5 and 11 Mbps in order to highlight the effect of the bit rate on network performance for both mechanisms.

A Hidden Node Aware Network Allocation Vector Management System for Multi-hop Wireless Ad hoc Networks

Many performance evaluations for IEEE 802.11distributed coordination function (DCF) have been previouslyreported in the literature. Some of them have clearly indicatedthat 802.11 MAC protocol has poor performance in multi-hopwireless ad hoc networks due to exposed and hidden nodeproblems. Although RTS/CTS transmission scheme mitigatesthese phenomena, it has not been successful in thoroughlyomit...

Performance Evaluation of IEEE 802.11 Distributed Coordination Function (DCF) in a Multi-Rate WLAN

IEEE 802.11 is the most important standard for wireless local area networks (WLANS). This paper presents a performance evaluation of IEEE 802.11 Distributed Coordination Function (DCF) in a multi-rate WLAN. We studied how throughput and delay varies with the distance of transmission in a multi-rate WLAN and the result was used to compare that of single rate WLAN. From the analysis it was observ...

A New Analytic Method for IEEE 802.11 Distributed Coordination Function

In this paper, we consider a network of N identical IEEE 802.11 DCF (Distributed Coordination Function) terminals with RTS/CTS mechanism, each of which is assumed to be saturated. For performance analysis, we propose a simple and efficient mathematical model to derive the statistical characteristics of the network such as the inter-transmission time of packets in the network and the service tim...

Throughput Performance of the Distributed and Point Coordination Functions of an IEEE 802.11 Wireless LAN

We study the throughput and delay as a function of load, of data traffic in an IEEE 802.11 Wireless LAN using the public domain network simulator ns-2. We evaluate the Distributed Coordination Function (DCF) as well as the Point Coordination Function (PCF) modes of operation of IEEE 802.11 in detail. Although the PCF gives consistently higher throughput in the ranges of load studied, it has hig...

Modeling of IEEE 802.11 DCF for Transient State Conditions

Performance of IEEE 802.11 distributed coordination function (DCF) has been studied by several authors under steady-state conditions. Behavior of DCF under transient state conditions and its modeling is important for analyzing several scenarios, such as, initialization of nodes in a wireless ad hoc network. In this paper, we present a mathematical model for IEEE 802.11 DCF to capture its behavi...
